Fun-Filled Learning in October

WOW!! What an October! The students in our third grade class were involved in some exciting educational activities this past month.
They created monsters using the KidPix program and wrote descriptions to go with them. We plan to send the descriptions to another third grade class in Texas and see if those students can draw our monsters using our descriptions.
Our school had the opportunity to meet a famous author, Mr. Alan St. Jean. He wrote "Aidan of Oren" which we are currently reading aloud in our classroom. The students were able to work with him in small groups to learn how authors write stories. We then used what we learned to write our own scarecrow stories in our classroom.
The students studied housing advertisements and created their own Haunted House Advertisements. They gave descriptions based on various"spooky" rooms found throughout the house and details of the backyard. They were able to create these haunted houses at home using various art supplies and a white paper bag. They were really excited to share their houses with the rest of the class. Can anyone say: Future Realtors?!?!?
To go with our study of matter in science, the students explored 3 bags full of air, water, and a piece of wood. They conducted various experiments and answered scientific questions based on their experiments and observations. Finally, they drew conclusions on what they learned about solids, liquids, and gases.
We ended our month with a Fall Festival. The students got to dress up and walk in our school's parade outside. It was a beautiful day and the students enjoyed seeing their friends!
