They are very proud of their achievements so far in this math 24 journey!

Spooky October

Our class had a great time creating Haunted House Advertisements this past month. Students wrote descriptions about their houses that they were selling and created a matching house using their creativity at home. They all enjoyed sharing their finished projects with the rest of the class.

We also had a great time at our Fall Festival. The students had a contest to see which group had the most creative, beautiful, team work, and craziest mummy. They had a great time and worked really hard to create their mummies!

Addition, subtraction, rounding, comparing numbers!!! We have been practicing all of these math skills with many review games. The students love these activities as they practice, practice, practice math. Many of the games can be played with cards at home. The game Close to 100 came home last week with directions and game recording sheet. There's no better time then now to plan a game night with the family!!!!

The students have also been studying maps and globes. Last week they worked with a partner to find different locations on a Pennsylvania map. They had to practice using the compass rose and learned the names of many cities in PA!!

Volcanic Eruption

After reading about volcanoes in various stories in our reading book, we celebrated the final day of PSSA's by building volcanoes of our own. The third graders then went outside and erupted their volcanoes. It was an exciting site to see. It was a great ending to a week of hard work and assessments!! Go Team Hatten!!!!

Rock Investigation

The students read about a rock collector in our reading story "Rocks in His Head". They become Rock Hounds during a Science experiment while studying rocks. They tested different kinds of rocks to see if various things would scratch them. Then they rubbed each rock on paper to see if it left a mark. Finally, they put vinegar on the rocks to see if there will be a reaction. Can anyone say "Future Geologists?"

Happy Easter

Happy Easter! Last week our class reviewed various math concepts and skills during our classroom Easter egg hunt. The students searched all over our classroom for eggs, opened them, read the math question hidden inside, and answered the question on their paper. The third graders enjoyed playing this traditional game and reviewing important math skills at the same time!

Technology Activities!!!

March brings us Women In History Month~The students took the time to research a famous woman of their choice, write important facts, and use Comic Life to import pictures and type a short report about their person. The students had a lot of fun learning about these famous women as well as a new computer program they can now use for other projects.

SYMMETRICAL ARCHITECTS~The students in our class also had the chance to review symmetry using the laptops. They created their own classrooms and a partner designed a symmetrical classroom to match. The students sat right next to each other and needed to remember to flip and turn various desks, chairs, tables, and rugs that they added to their classroom maps. They enjoyed being architects using this computer program.

Third Grade Miners

~Last month while studying minerals and mining the land, the students got a chance to become miners of their own. They used a chocolate chip cookie to represent the land and toothpicks to represent the mining tools. They learned what a challenge it is to extract the minerals (chocolate chips) without destroying the land around it (the rest of the cookie). What a yummy mining experience.

Where did February GO???????

Wow! What a February! It is usually a short month, but this year was extremely short. SNOW, SNOW, SNOW!!! We did accomplish many fun activities this past month though. The students learned about the phases of the moon and completed a fun Oreo cookie activity that illustrated the 4 main phases of the moon. They also completed various moon centers to review facts and information that they learned. In one of the centers, the students were able to "head to the moon" and collect moon rocks. In another center they learned about the first moon landing and took notes based on what was read.
In math, we reviewed measurement (capacity) by making a gallon man or girl. The students reviewed how many quarts, pints, and cups are in a gallon. They had a great time creating these gallon people.
During our Valentine Party, the students went to various centers all focused on Valentine's Day. Then they ate yummy food and delivered their Valentine's to their classmates.
Spring....HERE WE COME!!!
